DRD call on NI workers to 'Bike2Work'
Cycling to work could play an important part in curbing Northern Ireland’s traffic congestion and help tackle the growing problem of obesity.
The Department for Regional Development's (DRD) Roads Service which is promoting today's Bike2Work Day, which aims to encourage staff to leave their car at home and bike to work.
Commenting on the Travelwise NI campaign, Head of Roads Service’s Transportation Unit, Denis O’Hagan said: “There is a growing link between travel choices and health. Employers recognise this link and have joined us to encourage cycling as an alternative to the car.
“Many commuters argue that they don’t have time for regular exercise. Cycling to work gets you where you want to go while giving you a regular exercise routine. It helps to reduce congestion and brings health, environmental and social benefits to everyone in Northern Ireland.”
Amongst those commuters taking part in Wednesday's Bike2Work Day, are staff from many government departments across Northern Ireland, local councils, the Royal Victoria, Belfast City, Mater and Altnagelvin hospitals, Health Promotion Agency and the Northern Ireland Fire Service.
Translink are involved in promoting their Bike, Park and Ride initiative.
Belfast City council are offering a free breakfast, free bike parking and Dr Bike Service to all cycle commuters travelling into the city centre on the morning of Bike2Work Day.

Belfast Announces Charges For Public Bike Scheme
Belfast City Council has agreed charges for Northern Ireland’s first public bike hire scheme, the pilot phase of which is to be introduced in March 2015. The Council has also announced the locations for the 30 docking stations that will be involved in the first phase of the scheme.

Plans for Co Antrim's Magheramorne Quarry to be redeveloped into Ireland's first word-class recreational attraction have been approved. NI Environment Minister Sammy Wilson approved the proposals submitted by Lafarge Cement UK to build a harbour eco-village on the site of a derelict cement works and quarry near Larne.
