NI jobs growth continues

Employment figures released today show that Northern Ireland is continuing to experience jobs growth, with businesses reporting the highest number of employee jobs on record.

Seasonally adjusted figures from the Quarterly Employment Survey estimated that there were 677,590 jobs filled in March 2004, a net increase of 9,970 jobs over the year and the highest figure on record.

Unemployment levels also remain low. The current unemployment rate of 5.2% has fallen from 5.6% in the previous quarter and equals the lowest rate on record for Northern Ireland.

Commenting on the figures, Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister, Barry Gardiner, said: “It’s great news that more and more people are getting into work. Our unemployment rate is now at its lowest level on record. That is what we need - high employment levels and lower numbers claiming benefit.”

As it stands the Northern Ireland unemployment rate is lower than three other UK regions: London (6.9%), Scotland (5.9%) and West Midlands (5.5%) and is equal to the rate for the North East (5.2%).
