Broadband roundtable debate comes to NI
The major series of 'New Statesman' UK roundtable debates on broadband access has arrived in Northern Ireland.
The debates explore the implications that broadband has for the economy, culture and society.
In opening the debate, which included influential business leaders, academics and community representatives, Enterprise Minister, Barry Gardiner, said: “It is Government’s aim that Northern Ireland, with 100% access, will be the leading broadband region in Europe by 2005. Northern Ireland will become better through broadband.
“We need to explore broadband’s implications and harness its potential. That is why today’s debate is so important. We need to ask how the public sector, businesses and academia can make better use of it.
"We need to ask how we can spread best practice. We need to see which aspects of social and cultural life will champion broadband. We need to see how broadband will strengthen rural communities by making community services more accessible."
The Northern Ireland debate was opened by Mr Gardiner at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on Thursday.

The service will offer advice, assessment, and treatment for people aged five and over who are suffering from a sore throat.

Enterprise Minister Maria Eagle has today praised the successful Northern Ireland Broadband Flagship Project in County Londonderry. The Minister was visiting a ‘smart’ classroom, created as part of the Broadband Flagship Project, at the Strand Road campus of the North West Institute for Further and Higher Education (NWIFHE).

NI set for 100% broadband access
Northern Ireland is on track to provide broadband access to every household and business by the end of 2005, Enterprise Minister Barry Gardiner announced today. The news comes after it was confirmed that all of the 191 BT telephone exchanges throughout Northern Ireland have been upgraded to provide broadband services.
