Pearson commends crackdown on fuel fraudsters
Security Minister and Chair of the Organised Crime Task Force (OCTF) Ian Pearson has commended law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border following yesterday's multi-agency seizure of illegal fuel.
One person was arrested by customs officers after a series of early morning multi-agency raids in and around the border.
Supported by PSNI and agencies in the Republic, Customs investigators searched six business premises and homes in the Newry, Belleek, Camlough, Jonesborough and Warrenpoint areas in connection with a major oils fraud.
Around 110,000 litres of fuel, seven vehicles, four fuel laundering plants and associated equipment were seized.
Mr Pearson said: "This is an excellent example of the benefits of a joint approach to tackling organised crime. In this case not only have OCTF partners within Northern Ireland worked together, but with the co-operation of colleagues in the Irish Republic we have delivered a major strike against those criminals who are intent on undermining legitimate businesses and defrauding the Exchequer.
The cross-border multi-agency operation was codenamed 'Operation Nursery.'
In associated operations in the Republic of Ireland, officers from the Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) carried out three searches in Co Louth. Two individuals were arrested and a substantial amount of cash was also seized.
