Community and youth groups take to the streets
Some 500 people from community and youth groups across Belfast are literally taking to the streets in support of Belfast City Council’s anti-litter campaign, with the aim of cleaning up local areas badly affected by litter.
Nineteen groups of volunteers are taking part in the Belfast City Council Clean Community Challenge supported by Coca Cola, and the heat is on to find the best community cleanup and the most improved area.
Sam Skimin, Head of Cleansing Services, said: “We are delighted that so many Belfast people have responded enthusiastically to our challenge of tackling the littering problem head on.
“Through experience we know that community focused projects such as this Clean Community Challenge can be successful in encouraging shared responsibility, pride and ownership of an area, making a considerable difference to it and to the City as a whole.
“We would hope that this Challenge, which is part of Belfast City Council’s ‘Litter - Don’t Drop It, Stop It!’ campaign’ will encourage others to become involved in tackling the litter problem across Belfast."
The community cleanups are already under way and must be completed by Monday July 5.
One winning group from each area of the City (North, South, East and West) will each receive up to £1,000 to spend on equipment or materials needed for their organisation.
