Queen's University to close Armagh campus
Queen's University has announced it is to close its campus in Armagh City.
The decision was taken by the University's ruling body which blamed a lack of students and the resulting financial burden from the low enrolments.
Queen's Vice Chancellor Professor George Bain said there had not been sufficient demand for the campus and confirmed that courses at the university would now be moved to the local education college in the city.
Queen's Armagh campus opened in 1996 with the aim of attracting more than 1,000 part-time undergraduates.
However, at its peak the campus was barely able to get 400 on its books, now it contains fewer than 100 students.
Following today's decision it is likely that Queen's will give up its lease of the current building, which was formerly an old hospital building, in August 2005.
