Bio-security measures help protect agri-business
The use of innovative technology and e-systems plays a vital role in supporting bio-security and protects Northern Ireland’s farming industry.
This was the message from Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson after hearing that his department was selected from 100 entries across the UK and shortlisted for a prestigious BT Syntegra Government Computing Award for Innovation.
The ‘e-PVP’ application, which is linked with DARD’s APHIS (Animal & Public Health Information Systems), was designed by AMT-Sybex (NI) Ltd in partnership with DARD’s Information Systems Branch.
Explaining further, the Minister said: "The internet based ‘e-PVP’ system enables private vets anywhere in Northern Ireland, or the border counties of the Republic, to access all the details necessary for tuberculin testing their clients’ herds, and returning the results to DARD in an immediate paper-free manner, reducing delays and mistakes."
Commenting on future developments, Mr Pearson added: "Work is almost complete on software for pre-movement Brucellosis testing. This new disease control programme will be delivered via ‘e-PVP’, which will be the means for private vets to obtain permission to take samples, submit them to the lab and obtain results for clients.
"Plans are also in hand to enable down-load of electronic files of animal information directly onto vets’ hand-held computers. Once in place, this will avoid the need to manually key in bovine Tuberculosis test results back at the office – or indeed to take paper out onto farms at all."
The ‘e-PVP’ system, which was first conceived just before the Foot & Mouth outbreaks of 2001, was piloted and further developed with the help of Clare Veterinary Group, Ballyclare and Riada Veterinary Centre, Ballymoney.
The fully fledged system is now being rolled out across Northern Ireland practices, and already almost 75% of the volume of Northern Ireland’s bovine Tuberculosis testing work is being done by practices on the system, with more coming on all the time.
