Parties Opposed To Budget Urged To Put Forward Credible Alternative

The Alliance Party has called on those who opposed the latest Executive Budget to put forward a credible alternative.

The party's finance spokesperson, Eóin Tennyson, Upper Bann MLA, said it was a hugely challenging Budget but added the public realised parties were elected to step up and govern rather than vacate responsibility.

Mr Tennyson said: "This is a hugely challenging budget owing to a prolonged period of Tory austerity and stop-start government. Every Minister and Department has been left facing difficult choices without the resources they need.

"All parties agree the funding envelope from Westminster is not sufficient, but the only way we are going to make further progress in negotiations with Treasury is if we have a Budget in place. For some to grandstand in the absence of any costed or coherent alternative is reckless in the extreme, and amounts to gambling with vital public services.

"Alliance is committed to working with others to oppose austerity, secure the fair funding settlement Northern Ireland needs and deserves, and deliver the reform necessary to place our finances and political institutions on a more stable and sustainable footing. Today is a challenging but important step in that direction."
