Police Investigate Sectarian-Motivated Hate Crime In Portballintrae

Three men have been arrested in connection with a sectarian-motivated hate crime in Portballintrae.

On Monday, 03 June, at approximately 7.45pm, police received a report of an altercation between a number of men outside a boat club in the Beach Road area. It is understood that the incident started over a flag displayed on a boat.

The boat was later set on fire and extensively damaged.

Inspector Armour said: "Officers attended the scene, and one man required hospital treatment for his injuries.

"Three men aged 25, 63 and 30, were all arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including criminal damage and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"The 63-year-old man has since been released on bail, whilst the other two men remain in custody at this time as enquiries continue. We are treating this report as a sectarian-motivated hate crime and we are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and noticed what happened.

"Anyone with any information or who may have mobile, CCTV or other footage can contact police on 101 quoting reference 1651 03/06/24."

Two Men Attacked With Baseball Bats In Co Antrim
Two 18-year-old men have been attacked with baseball bats in Whitehead, Co Antrim. The victims were closing premises in the Balmoral Avenue area at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, 04 October when three men assaulted them. Both men were treated in hospital for their injuries. One has been discharged, and the other remains in hospital.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
