Ballymena bus firm secure £66.5m order
A Ballymena bus firm has secured an order worth £66.5 million which will create nearly 150 new jobs.
Wrightbus will supply 486 buses to First Group PLC over the next 18 months enabling the company to deliver new buses to its major fleets in Manchester, Halifax and Huddersfield, Glasgow, Bath, Leicester, Aberdeen, Northampton, and London.
The buses, which include single deck, double deck and articulated vehicles, will start entering service in October this year, with deliveries continuing until the end of 2005.
Commenting on the order, Wrightbus Vice President, Mark Nodder, said: “We are honoured and delighted to be playing a role in this massive project. It is a huge endorsement of our product quality and commitment to after-sales support, and we look forward to strengthening the relationship with First and also our partners in Volvo.”
First Group PLC Chief Executive, Moir Lockhead, added: “This massive investment demonstrates First’s commitment to its customers. The combination of Wrightbus and Volvo Bus continue to produce a vehicle that allows us to deliver the high quality that our customers expect.
"Across the UK these vehicles are playing a key role in helping us to transform travel and to encourage more people to consider using public transport.”
Wrightbus Limited currently employs in excess of 800 people, with a current turnover of close to £60 million.

Man Dies After Bus Fall In Belfast
Detectives are investigating the death of an 80-year-old man who fell from a bus in Belfast. Police have said that they believe the man was travelling on a 2J Translink Metro bus service at around 11:15am on Friday, 08 November, when he suffered a fall as the bus travelled along Royal Avenue, near it's junction with North Street.

Ballymena-based bus manufacturer Wrightbus has secured a contract to provide FirstGroup with a new fleet of vehicles. Wrightbus is to supply 301 StreetLite buses, making up the majority of a £70m investment in 425 vehicles for FirstGroup's bus division.
