Glentoran star to sign for Preston North End
Northern Ireland striker, Andy Smith looks set to join his international team-mate David Healy in full-time football by signing for Preston North End.
The Glentoran star was believed to be joining Milton Keynes Dons but Craig Brown's side came in with a deal just hours before the Dons came out of administration, enabling them to bid for the Belfast-based player.
Commenting on the deal, Glentoran Chief Executive Tom Dick said: “We have agreed terms with Preston North End for the transfer of Andy Smith.
"It was expected that Andy would sign for Milton Keynes Dons - but just hours before they came out of administration an offer from North End came in.
"Andy felt that a move to a First Division club was too great an opportunity to turn down."
Preston chairman Derek Shaw said he was delighted with the signing. "It’s a good deal for the club at the moment as it’s a position that has become a priority at the minute with the movement of Ricardo Fuller a strong possibility," he said.
"Smith is a player that both Craig (Brown) and Clive (Middlemass) have been monitoring for a while now and they both believe he has a good chance of progressing."
The fee is undisclosed although both Preston and the Dons were prepared to match Glentoran's valuation of the player, which is believed to be around £150,000.
