Blue Light Card Holders To Avail Of New ABC 'Get Active' Discounts
A new 'Get Active' membership for Blue Light Card holders, has been launched by the Lord Mayor of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough, Councillor Sarah Duffy.
The getactiveabc single membership is available to those working for the emergency services, NHS, social care sector and armed forces, simply by presenting the Blue Light Card.
This new discounted corporate membership offers access to gyms, swimming pools, fitness classes and racquet sports at the nine leisure centres across the borough. Additional perks include paddlesports, cycle hire and aqua inflatable sessions at South Lake Watersports, climbing wall sessions at Gilford Community Centre, and unlimited access to the Sanarium at Banbridge Leisure Centre and the Relaxation Suite at Orchard Leisure Centre.
Finding time to fit in exercise around shift patterns can be a challenge when factoring in family time, friends and other commitments. Offering state-of-the-art Life Fitness gym equipment and a wide variety of activities to suit all fitness levels, this new membership helps key workers in the community work out in a way that suits them best for less. It appreciates the huge pressures and demands of roles undertaken by Blue Light Card holders and recognises the importance of offering support through jump-starting or turbocharging the health and wellbeing journey.
Speaking about the initiative, Lord Mayor Councillor Sarah Duffy said: "It is with great pride that I launch this new membership and continue our drive to ensure that access to fitness and leisure facilities remains as affordable as possible. Our blue light workers are the backbone of our community, often putting their lives on the line, and it’s imperative that they get the opportunity to look after their own physical and mental health and wellbeing by getting active."
Construction Starts On £1.7m 3G Pitch At Laurelhill Sports Zone
Construction has started on a £1.7 million full-size 3G soccer pitch and additional parking at Laurelhill Sports Zone, which will complement the existing synthetic hockey pitch.
This upgraded facility will serve both Laurelhill Community College and Killowen Primary School as part of their curriculum, while the wider community will have the opportunity to book the pitch outside of school hours and on weekends.
Councillor Jonathan Craig, Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee said: "The council is pleased to invest in another open space project to offer both local schools and the community access to quality sporting facilities. The soccer pitch will provide valuable grounds for the schools to offer PE sessions and after school activities, which will hopefully inspire an interest in the sport at grassroots level.
"Sports clubs, youth groups and friends can also access the pitch, outside of school hours, providing a fantastic community hub for everyone to enjoy. Taking part in physical activity is a great way to improve your health and wellbeing therefore the new pitch will offer a fun way to get everyone moving together. I look forward to visiting the facility once the project is completed to see many goals being scored."
The project is expected to be completed in March 2025.
