PSNI Welcomes Sentencing Of Man For 'Harrowing' Domestic Assault
The PSNI has welcomed the sentencing of a man at Laganside Crown Court in connection with a domestic assault in North Belfast last year.
32-year-old Jordan Spence was sentenced to 40 months for assault occasioning actual bodily harm, 12 months for false imprisonment, 12 months for criminal damage and 12 months for threats to kill. All of these are to run concurrently.
Welcoming the sentencing, a Police spokesperson said: "The victim has shown immense strength and commitment in supporting this case through the courts.
"This was a particularly harrowing incident in March 2023, in which the victim was subject to a horrific ordeal which left her distraught. Fortunately, the victim was able to leave the property and seek help. I would like to commend the victim in this case for coming forward and seeking justice. Seeing your case through the criminal justice system is a huge undertaking and by doing so she has displayed immense fortitude throughout.
"Domestic abuse is a terrifying and impactful crime and very often people who are being abused feel isolated, vulnerable and frightened and don't know where to turn. It is vital that victims know there is help available and I would encourage anyone suffering domestic abuse to come forward and report the matter to the police. We are here to help you and we will robustly investigate all allegations of abuse and fully support you through the criminal justice process. Please be assured that you can come forward in confidence and speak to Detectives in Public Protection Branch who will treat you with sensitivity and respect.
"Anyone who is suffering from domestic abuse can contact police on the non-emergency 101 number, or 999 in an emergency.
"A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is also available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual abuse, now or in the past. The number to call is 0808 802 1414."

On these key festive dates from 24th December 2023 to 1st January 2024, the service also arrested more under 18s for domestic abuse related offences than the previous three years.

79 Domestic Abuse Incidents Reported On Christmas Day Last Year
A total of 79 domestic abuse incidents were reported on Christmas Day in Northern Ireland last year, according to the police. 111 incidents were reported on Boxing Day and from 24 December to 28 December last year, there were a total of 515 recorded domestic incidents.

Police respond to a domestic call-out every 23 minutes in Northern Ireland, in what has been described as an 'endemic problem' of abuse in the home. According to a report by the Policing Board, one in four women in the province will be attacked by their partner.

Domestic Violence Targeted
There has been a call for more to be done to tackle the issue of domestic violence. Members of the Northern Ireland Policing Board met this week with senior police officers and officials from the Department of Health & Social Services to discuss ongoing programmes of work to deal with both domestic violence and abuse.
