DEL launches strategy to promote 'Essential Skills'
The Department of Education and Learning (DEL) has launched a major training strategy today after it was revealed that one-fifth of Northern Ireland’s working population performs at the lowest level of 'Essential Skills'.
The department's 'Essential Skills for Living Strategy' has been designed to improve the levels of essential skills in adults, and encourages employers to access free, tailor-made learning programmes for their staff.
Essential Skills spokesperson, Deirdre McGill, said: “A lack of good Essential Skills can have serious health and safety consequences and make it difficult for employees to put into practice new procedures or to undertake changes in working practices, particularly with the introduction of new technologies. This leads to problems that not only limit the capacity of the worker but the performance and profitability of the whole company.”
Fermanagh College of Further Education is already working with local firms who have already signed up for free adult learning programmes. The project, which is funded by the European Union Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, works closely with these firms to identify work-related Essential Skills needs - particularly in relation to understanding health and safety procedures - and contribute to the personal development and employability skills of the workforce.
