Restoration Work Begins On Hilden School
Restoration work has officially begun on the historic Hilden School building in Lisburn, marking a significant milestone for the local community.
Supported by a £833,846 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the project will be led by Woodvale Construction, with completion targeted for September 2025.
Originally established in October 1912 to educate children of Hilden Mill workers, the school closed in 2008. For years, community members have advocated for its revival, and now, this cherished site is set to become a vibrant community hub. The restored building will feature a tearoom, childcare services, and a permanent heritage display celebrating the history of the Hilden area.
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council (LCCC), partnering with the Resurgam Trust, spearheads the transformation of Hilden School into a centre for community life, blending historical preservation with modern functionality. The restoration aims to honour the building’s legacy while creating a welcoming space for the public, ensuring Hilden School remains a cultural landmark for generations to come.
The Lisburn Museum will collaborate with community partners to curate an annual program of events and provide training for community heritage volunteers. This initiative will ensure that the site’s legacy is preserved and shared with future generations, enriching the cultural fabric of the area.
The restoration of Hilden School is part of LCCC's broader capital programme, which aims to enhance the Lisburn and Castlereagh area by delivering high-quality, inclusive facilities that reflect the needs of local communities. This project is expected to boost activity and investment in the region, improving the quality of life for residents and drawing visitors from near and far.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

A four-year-old boy has died following a tragic accident at Hilden Brewery in Lisburn on Thursday afternoon. It is believed he was crushed under a metal tank. The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

Leading Alliance councillor, Seamus Close has expressed his "alarm" following news of jobs cuts at a Lisburn based thread-making factory. Around 55 jobs are to go at Coats Barbour in Hilden, near Lisburn, reducing the company's workforce in the plant to just over 100.
