NI stars of the future beat Samba boys

The future of Northern Ireland international football looked even brighter today after its Milk Cup elite side beat Brazil at the Coleraine Showgrounds last night.

Despite going a goal behind in the first half, Roy Millar's men defeated the South Americans 2-1 in front of a huge home crowd thanks to a double strike by Hibernian striker Dean Shiels.

The 19-year-old struck twice in the second half as Northern Ireland produced a scintillating performance to beat one of the world's great footballing nations.

Sheils, a former Arsenal reserve striker, said: ''I'm totally made up. It was a great result for our country.

"For a country as small as we are to beat the best footballing nation in the world is sensational."

Coach Roy Millar added: "It was one of the proudest moments in my coaching career. I'm just disappointed that we lost our opening game against Russia to an own goal because we played so well."

Last night's victory bodes well for senior Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez who continues his rebuilding plans with an away game against Switzerland next month ahead of the opening of the World Cup 2006 Qualifying fixtures in September.
