Long-Term Finances Still 'Ongoing Concern' - Alliance
Following yesterday's UK Budget announcement, long-term finances remain an 'ongoing concern' in Northern Ireland according to Alliance's Sorcha Eastwood.
The Lagan Valley MP said the Budget highlighted the need for reform of politics and transformation of public services and that there were many disappointments included with Chancellor Rachel Reeve's statement.
Eastwood said: "It falls short of what is required to meet day-to-day running costs of public services in Northern Ireland. Our long-term finances remain a concern, with fair funding still to be achieved.
"The vital transformation of our public services cannot happen from a platform of cuts, short-term moves and instability. The lack of political reform is leading to one-year, non-strategic budgets, highlighted again.
"Meanwhile, while I am thankful our call for additional support for carers was listened to, many vulnerable households will remain concerned following the Budget.
"With the cost of living increasing, the two-child benefit limit should be removed and there should be clear commitments to mitigate winter fuel payments and give other supports."
She added: "Alliance will continue to push for a review of our relative need in Northern Ireland, as well as meaningful support for those who need it most."
Minister Long Announces New Prisoner Ombudsman
A new Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been announced.
Justice Minister Naomi Long revealed the appointment of Darrin Jones within the role, which includes the responsibility for investigating complaints from prisoners and visitors, as well as deaths in custody in Northern Ireland.
The appointment was made following an open competition and Mr Jones will take up office on November 1, 2024 for a term of three years.
Ms Long said: "I would like to congratulate Darrin on his appointment as Prisoner Ombudsman.
"The Ombudsman plays a key role in the criminal justice system, ensuring independent and impartial investigation of eligible complaints and deaths in custody, instilling confidence in our prison system, and I wish him every success in this challenging role."
Police Make Arson Attack Plea
Police in Fermanagh and Omagh have made an appeal for information following an arson attack.
A report was made to police on Tuesday, October 29, detailing that two vehicles in the Lakeview area of Lisnaskea were set alight, causing damage to both, at around 12.45am.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.
A statement from the police said: "Enquiries are ongoing and we ask anyone who may be able to assist with our investigation, particularly anyone with CCTV, dashcam or other relevant footage, to contact officers on 101, quoting reference number 44 of 29/10/24."

Police Ombudsman’s report laid before parliament
The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Dr John Reid, has unveiled The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland’s first annual report before Parliament on Monday July 23. The report covers the Police Ombudsman office’s discharge of its functions during the first 17 months since it was established in November 2000.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

New Police Ombudsman Appointed
Marie Anderson has taken up her new role as Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland. The former Public Services Ombudsman succeeds Dr Michael Maguire and is the fourth person to hold the position. Her new office, with a staff of around 150 people and budget of over £9 million, is responsible for investigating complaints against the police.
