Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026.
Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022. This week, minor infrastructure work commenced at car parks in Musgrave Park Hospital, Daisy Hill Hospital, and Craigavon Area Hospital. Additional hospital sites will see similar work begin in the coming weeks. It's important to note that until the new system is fully operational in May 2026, current parking charges will remain in effect. Car park users should continue to pay as usual.
To facilitate the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras and associated infrastructure, specialist engineers have conducted site surveys across various Trust sites. These surveys aimed to determine the optimal number, type, and placement of cameras, as well as assess the environmental conditions at each location.
By May 2026, over 200 cameras will be installed at 16 different sites. In the coming months, engineering teams will be focused on erecting camera poles and completing other necessary infrastructure work.
Further details on how drivers will utilise ANPR-managed hospital car parks will be provided closer to the implementation of free parking.
