Funeral takes place of leading republican
The funeral of veteran Irish republican Joe Cahill has taken place in Belfast today.
The 84-year-old, who died on Friday following a short illness, was buried in Milltown Cemetery following his funeral Mass in St John's Church on the Falls Road.
Born in Belfast in 1920, Joe Cahill dedicated much of his life to fighting partition and was known as a key figure in founding the Provisional IRA.
He was sentenced to death for the murder of a policeman in 1942, but his sentence commuted to a prison term following the intervention of the Pope.
Despite being described by Gerry Adams as a "physical force" republican, Cahill backed the peace initiatives which would ultimately result in the Good Friday Agreement - playing a key role in persuading many republican doubters both in Northern Ireland and the US.
Speaking during one of his last public appearances at Sinn Fein's annual conference last year, Cahill told his fellow republicans: "We've won the war, now let's win the peace."
Joe Cahill is survived by his wife, one son and six daughters.

Four men have been arrested by police investigating dissident republican activity. The men, aged 46, 47, 49 and 54 were detained in custody following a number of planned searches in Belfast on Tuesday, 23 August, They are currently being questioned at Musgrave Police Station.

Two people have been arrested in L'Derry following an investigation into dissident republican activity. The woman, 43, and the man, 44, were arrested in the Marlborough Avenue area on Monday. They are currently being questioned at Antrim police station.
