MRSA in 30 NI patient related deaths
New figures have revealed that MRSA superbugs contributed to the deaths of 30 patients in Northern Ireland hospitals last year.
The figures, released by the Department of Health today, also showed that MRSA-related deaths in the province have doubled in the last five years with just under 500 cases of MRSA recorded between 2001 and 2003.
Today's figures come a day after the British Cleaning Council said that luggage and belongings, plus visitor numbers, were making wards harder to clean.
The BCC said it was calling for restrictions on visiting times the amount of belongings patients can bring in to hospitals. It called on patients to help tackle the problem which is costing the NHS around £1 billion a year.
