Infrastructure Minister Pledges Collaboration With NI Water

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has pledged to work collaboratively with NI Water to address the challenges facing the region's wastewater infrastructure.

Following a meeting with NI Water Chairperson Jo Aston and Chief Executive Dr Sara Venning, Minister Kimmins acknowledged the significant challenges facing the wastewater system.

"The issues facing our ageing waste-water infrastructure are well documented and I have made it clear that I want to work collaboratively with NI Water to address those challenges," said Minister Kimmins.

The Minister emphasised the need for increased investment in wastewater infrastructure, stating that she will work with Executive colleagues to make a strong case for further funding.

"I am looking at new ways of working and I am bringing forward new legislation in relation to sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), which will help to store stormwater so that it releases slower into the wastewater network," said Minister Kimmins. "My officials are examining the legislative change required to bring forward developer contributions with a view to consulting on the proposals in March 2025."

Minister Kimmins stressed the importance of working together to improve wastewater infrastructure to support housing growth, economic development, and improve water quality.
