Man appears in court charged with attempted murder

A 30-year-old man has appeared in court today charged with the attempted murder of another man in Londonderry at the weekend.

Daniel David Paul Kerr, from Ballymore Park in the Creggan area of the city, denies trying to murder Don McMenamin, 20, following an altercation outside a leisure centre in Rosemount in the early hours of Sunday morning. Mr McMenamin is currently on a life support machine following the attack.

A detective sergeant told the court that when charged, the defendant replied: "I hit one person once.

"I do not think the person I hit is the person you have named, and I never struck anybody with any type of weapon whatsoever."

Family and friends of both men attended today's hearing at Londonderry Magistrates Court.

A woman who was also arrested in relation to the assault has been released pending a report to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
