Alliance MLA Welcomes Historic Election of Belfast Conradh na Gaeilge President

Alliance Language and Heritage spokesperson Sian Mulholland MLA has welcomed the election of the first Belfast president of Conradh na Gaeilge in 30 years.

"This weekend's election at the ard fheis in Wexford marks a significant milestone for the Irish language community," said Mulholland. "I warmly congratulate Mr. Mac Giolla Bhéin on his appointment as president after his long-standing commitment to Conradh na Gaeilge since 2005."

She highlighted the growing popularity of the Irish language and the importance of strong leadership, especially in light of current challenges.

"At a time when the Irish language is experiencing growing popularity worldwide, supported by historic new legislation both north and south, strong leadership is essential. The challenges facing the Irish language community, including the current funding crisis and issues within the Irish Medium Education sector, require dedicated advocacy and innovative solutions," Mulholland stated.

While noting concerns about legal proceedings against the Executive regarding the Irish language strategy, she emphasised the importance of dialogue.

"While I note with concern the emergency motion directing legal proceedings against the Executive regarding the Irish language strategy, I believe constructive dialogue remains the most effective path forward," she said.

Mulholland reiterated Alliance's commitment to language legislation and working with all stakeholders.

SF MLA Appointed Chair Of APG On Early Education and Childcare

Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason has today been appointed as Chairperson of the All-Party Group (APG) on Early Education and Childcare.

She replaces outgoing chair Nicola Brogan.

The South Down MLA said she will use her position to "have the voices of families and childcare providers heard."

"I am delighted to be appointed as chair of this APG as the vital work of tackling childcare costs continues.

"Already we have seen positive progress through the Executive’s childcare subsidy scheme, although I recognise there is more work ahead, including the delivery of a full childcare strategy.

"Childcare is a vital issue right throughout our society, and acutely affects our economy with many parents, particularly women, feeling like they have no option but to stay out of work to meet these bills.

"I am committed to working with the Education Minister, other parties and the childcare sector to cut costs further, keep money in the pockets of workers and families and ensure children have the best start to life."
