£300,000 Resurfacing Scheme Announced for Knockloughrim Roads

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £300,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme for the Knockloughrim Link Road and Hillhead Road in Knockloughrim, set to begin on Monday, 28th April 2025.

The resurfacing work will cover approximately 930 metres of the Knockloughrim Link Road and Hillhead Road, stretching from the Carricknakielt Road to property number 320.

Minister Kimmins commented on the investment: "This is a substantial investment for the Knockloughrim area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to investing in and improving our rural road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."

To ensure the safe completion of the scheme, a full road closure will be necessary from the A6 Glenshane Road to the Broagh Road. This closure will be in effect each day from Monday, 28th April, to Friday, 9th May 2025.

During the road closure, a signed diversionary route for through traffic will be in place, following the A6 Glenshane Road, A54 Magherafelt Road, A54 Main Street, A54 Moyola Road, C557 Knockloughrim Road, and C557 Hillhead Road.

The Department for Infrastructure has planned the works and traffic management to minimise disruption. While efforts have been made to accommodate local access and Translink bus and school services throughout the scheme, road users should anticipate some delays and are advised to allow extra travel time in the area. Motorists are also asked to adhere to all temporary traffic restrictions.

Weather permitting, the resurfacing works are expected to be largely completed by Friday, 9th May 2025. The Department has assured the public that any changes to this timeline will be communicated.

DUP MLA Calls For Swift Police Action Following Parade Regalia Breach In L'Derry

DUP MLA for Foyle, Gary Middleton, has called for immediate police action to hold those accountable for breaching a Parades Commission determination during a republican parade in Londonderry.

Mr. Middleton expressed his deep concern: "I am deeply concerned by (the) republican parade in Londonderry, which blatantly defies the Parades Commission’s determination. The display of paramilitary-style uniforms, proscribed flags, and symbols associated with terrorism is not only provocative to the people of this city who want to move forward in peace but also outside the law."

He went on to assert that the event, organised by individuals linked to the New IRA, represented a "glorification of terror" and a rejection of democratic principles. "It is unacceptable that, in 2025, we are still witnessing such public displays of hatred and division," he said.

Mr. Middleton acknowledged that the PSNI had monitored the parade but insisted that this was not sufficient. "The PSNI have monitored this parade but their action must not stop at that. There must be charges and prosecutions for any breaches of the law. Those who flout legal rulings and glorify terrorism must face the consequences."

He concluded by emphasising the desire for peace among the majority of Londonderry's residents. "Londonderry deserves better. The vast majority of people, from all backgrounds, want a peaceful future free from the shadow of violence. We stand with them."

SDLP Leader Pays Tribute To Pope Francis

Claire Hanna MP has paid tribute to Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, acknowledging the global impact of his ladership.

"Pope Francis's passing will be mourned not only by those of the Catholic faith, but by people across the world. He was a leader of humanity and authenticity, deeply attuned to the real lives of those he served. Throughout his ministry, he championed the poor and marginalised, including refugees," Ms. Hanna stated.

She highlighted the Pope's final public address, noting its significance: "Significantly, in his final public address, he called for peace in Gaza and urged a ceasefire — a testament to his enduring commitment to justice and compassion."

Ms. Hanna also recognised the Pope's focus on environmental stewardship. "He led on behalf of future generations too, through his focus on environmental leadership and what he called 'care for our common home'."

The MP emphasised the Pope's example for other leaders: "His example reminded political and faith leaders alike that true leadership is found in humility, service, and speaking up for the voiceless."

She concluded with a reflection on the timing of his passing. "It is poignant that he lived to see and celebrate Easter Sunday and the resurrection at the core of the Christian faith.”

Ms. Hanna finished her statement with the Irish phrase, "Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal agus go mbeidh Proinsias i bhFlaithis," which translates to "May his noble soul be at God's right hand and may Francis be in Heaven."
