Belfast Opens Book Of Condolence For Pope Francis

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, has opened a book of condolence at Belfast City Hall in memory of Pope Francis, who passed away recently.

Expressing his sadness, The Lord Mayor said: "I was saddened to hear of the death of Pope Francis just a day after he gave his final Easter blessing at St Peter's Square on Sunday. We extend our sympathies and condolences to all those who are mourning Pope Francis's death. We can all reflect on the way Pope Francis worked to bring people together from different back grounds through mutual respect and understanding.”

Father Tim Bartlett, who was the principal organiser of the late Pope’s visit to Ireland in 2018, was also present at the opening.

A special council meeting will be held tomorrow, Thursday 24 April at 5 pm, to mark Pope Francis’s passing and to allow members to pay tribute to his legacy. The meeting will be live-streamed and accessible to the public.

The physical book of condolence is available for signing at Belfast City Hall from Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 5 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Belfast City Hall will be illuminated in yellow and white on Saturday evening as a mark of respect.

An online book of condolence is also accessible on Belfast City Council’s website at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/condolences.

NI people need to take heed of will deficit
A leading charity has said that around 50% of people who die in Northern Ireland do not have a will. The Simon Community revealed the statistic as part of a campaign to raise awareness of the issue of being intestate. The campaign involves Belfast law firm Francis Hanna and Company assisting people to make out a will free of charge.

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Lilian Seenoi-Barr, has opened books of condolence in both Derry and Strabane for the public to express their sympathies following the death of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old pontiff passed away on Easter Monday at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

Pope Francis Will Not Visit NI In August
Pope Francis will not be travelling to Northern Ireland in August. The announcement was made by the Vatican who outlined his itinerary on 25 and 26 August. He will visit a homeless day centre and he will also attend the Festival of Families at Croke Park in Dublin. This will be the first papal visit to Ireland in almost 40 years.
