Accessible Transport A 'Cornerstone Of Social Inclusion' – Kimmins

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has described accessible transport as a "cornerstone of social inclusion," emphasising the need to build on existing progress to improve mobility for everyone in Northern Ireland's diverse society.

The Minister was speaking at the Department for Infrastructure's (DfI) Inclusive Transport & Travel conference in Belfast. The event, part of a series focusing on DfI's 'Foundations for a Better Future' programme, brought together various organisations to discuss and promote enhanced transport accessibility and inclusion, with a specific focus on the 'Including People' foundation.

"The ability to move freely and independently is not just a convenience; it underpins our social, economic, and cultural fabric," Minister Kimmins stated. "There is a lot of good work ongoing across DfI and Translink in this space but there is always room to do more."

She elaborated on the broader meaning of accessibility: "Accessibility in transport is more than providing ramps or designated seating, it is about working to create an inclusive environment. It is about dignity, equality, and the ability to live without barriers. By ensuring easy access to transport systems, we open up more opportunities for employment, education, and business."

The conference follows recent Disability Equality Training undertaken by DfI's senior management team, where officials experienced firsthand the barriers faced by disabled people when travelling around Belfast.

"People with sensory impairments and disabilities must be part of the planning and implementation of transport services," the Minister added. "Inclusivity and putting people at the heart of everything we do is one of my department's Foundations for a Better Future and I am committed to ensuring my Department continues to work directly with disabled and older people to build on progress to date."
