PSNI Engages In Omagh Bombing Inquiry Hearings

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally, Justice Branch, has confirmed that the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is actively participating in the Omagh Bombing Inquiry hearings, which convened in Belfast this week (21 and 22 May).

The hearings are focused on the redaction of documents intended for release to Core Participants.

The PSNI has been present at these hearings, making both oral and written submissions to assist the Inquiry in its decisions. A key area of discussion has been the approach to be taken regarding the release of suspects' names. Assistant Chief Constable McNally clarified that "the PSNI is not submitting formal applications for the anonymity of suspects in the Inquiry," but rather their submissions are "to assist the Chairman of the Inquiry in reaching an informed decision on the approach to be taken in respect of this important issue."

The Chief Constable has previously affirmed the PSNI's commitment to providing its full cooperation and support, which includes supplying the Inquiry with all relevant materials in its possession. This is intended to ensure the Chairman is in the best possible position to reach his findings at the conclusion of the Inquiry.

Assistant Chief Constable McNally reiterated the PSNI's dedication to the process: "The PSNI recognises the responsibility it bears in this process, and it will continue to engage with the Inquiry constructively and respectfully, as it has done since its inception in February last year. The PSNI reiterates its commitment to the Inquiry and the important work it is undertaking."
