Hydebank Wood Celebrates 10 Years As A Secure College

Hydebank Wood Secure College and Women's Prison is marking its 10th anniversary as a secure college, with Justice Minister Naomi Long proclaiming it "more than just a prison; it's a place of learning, opportunity, and where people get a second chance to build a positive future." The transformation from a young offenders' centre to Northern Ireland's first secure college reflects a "remarkable journey" in reimagining the purpose of prisons and fostering rehabilitation.

Minister Long highlighted the evolution, driven by a 2011 review, which has seen the development of purpose-built classrooms, new workshops, and innovative programmes focusing on literacy, numeracy, vocational skills, and personal development. Crucially, the daily interactions between staff and those in their care have shifted to a "more supportive and mentoring approach," recognising individual needs and potential. The Minister particularly praised the "vital partnership" with Belfast Metropolitan College and community/voluntary groups as a "cornerstone" of the secure college model, ensuring high-quality, relevant educational provision and support in areas like mental health and addiction.

Belfast Metropolitan College's interim Principal and Chief Executive Damian Duffy echoed these sentiments, emphasising the partnership's role in transforming Hydebank Wood into a facility with education, training, and skills acquisition at its core. He noted that the programs equip students with essential skills for employment and positive contributions to their families, communities, and society upon release, leading to improved self-esteem, wellbeing, and successful reintegration. Both Minister Long and Mr Duffy expressed their commitment to continuing this vital partnership to build a safer Northern Ireland.
