Detectives Investigate Suspected Arson On Lecky Road

Detectives are appealing for information and witnesses following a suspected arson incident on Lecky Road in the early hours of today, Tuesday, 03 June.

Police received a report of a blaze in an alleyway just before 2:10am. It's believed that a metal cage containing gas cylinders was deliberately set on fire, with one cylinder reportedly partially exploding. The fire then spread to a storeroom at the back of a nearby property, forcing a resident of a close-proximity flat to flee for safety after being alerted by neighbours.

A cordon was put in place to allow the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) to safely extinguish the fire.

Detective Sergeant McAdoo stated: "We want to acknowledge the swift actions of the NIFRS in dealing with this blaze which they have confirmed started as a result of deliberate ignition. This was a reckless act, given the number of homes in the immediate area, and which we are investigating as arson with intent to endanger life."

Police are urging anyone who was in the area and witnessed any suspicious activity, or anyone with footage that could assist the investigation, to call 101, quoting reference 61 of 03/06/25.

A report can also be made via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport/ or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via crimestoppers-uk.org/
