PSNI cannot cope without part-time reserve, says report
A new report has claimed that the PSNI would not be able to cope if the part-time reserve was abolished.
The 60-page report by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) said that unless the part-time reserve was bolstered the police would not be able to "provide the same levels of service it once did".
Inspectorate of Constabulary Ken Williams expressed concern for the future of the reserve which has split opinion among unionists and nationalists.
However, Mr Williams did say that the PSNI was beginning to appear to face "real issues" regarding recruitment and funding.
Praising Chief Constable Hugh Orde's role in the new report, Mr Williams said that the newly reorganised team of chief officers suggested long-term stability, and that the PSNI had, since its inception, developed the feel of a performance driven culture.
But, a new problem has arisen for the force in the face of problems regarding sexism and discrimination following a 34% increase in female recruits this year. However, despite this problem, the PSNI was beginning to respond to these issues, Mr Williams added.
Responding to today's report, the PSNI said it would not comment on specific issues raised but that it acknowledged "much of the work in progress and many of the successes that have been achieved, as well as highlighting areas where activity needs to be focused".
"The Police Service is committed to working with HMIC in its quarterly visits to address the number of challenges pinpointed, to ensure that standards expected both by government and communities in Northern Ireland are met," it added.
