Finance Minister Praises Progress Of £300m Derry City And Strabane Deal

Finance Minister John O'Dowd has commended the ongoing progress of the Derry City and Strabane District Council City Deal, emphasising its pivotal role in unlocking the North West's economic potential.

The Minister's visit to Derry and Strabane underscored the collaborative nature of the initiative, which is built on partnership, shared goals, and unwavering commitment.

The Derry City and Strabane District Council City Deal represents an investment of over £300 million, poised to act as a significant catalyst for real change throughout the area. This funding injection is anticipated to be instrumental for the people of the region, fostering economic growth and opportunity.

Minister O'Dowd highlighted that City and Growth Deals across Northern Ireland currently encompass some 50 projects, covering every council area. These initiatives represent a robust partnership between the government, local councils, and communities, aiming to leverage collective strengths for regional success.

During his visit, the Minister received an update on the progress of the Deal's various projects. He specifically noted plans for a new museum, the establishment of an innovation and data analytics centre, and the regeneration efforts along Derry's Central Riverfront and within Strabane. These developments are expected to attract further private sector investment into the North West.

"The positive momentum created by the Deal and wider investment will help to boost employment, increase productivity, and address skills gaps," Minister O'Dowd added. He affirmed that his Department would continue to work closely with all partners involved to further progress regional balance and ensure all areas across Northern Ireland have the opportunity to thrive.
