Chief Constable Urges Safe And Respectful 12th Celebrations
As Northern Ireland prepares for a weekend of traditional bonfires and parades, PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has issued an appeal to communities, urging that these significant cultural events be conducted in a manner that is safe, respectful, and inclusive for all.
Chief Constable Boutcher acknowledged the deep sense of identity these celebrations represent, noting they are a cherished part of Northern Ireland's history and culture. He emphasised that such occasions should serve as opportunities for communities to unite in a spirit of pride and inclusiveness through their local traditions.
However, he stressed the critical importance of observing these events in a way that truly respects the diverse backgrounds and cultures of everyone sharing these neighbourhoods. "Mutual respect is the foundation of strong, safe communities," Chief Constable Boutcher stated. "There is no place for hate or intimidation—only space for celebration that welcomes and celebrates, not divides."
Throughout the weekend, PSNI officers will maintain a visible presence on the ground, collaborating closely with community leaders, event organisers, and local representatives. Their primary aim will be to support lawful, peaceful, and family-friendly gatherings. The Chief Constable affirmed that where necessary, the Police Service would take firm and proportionate action to safeguard public safety.
Looking beyond the weekend, Chief Constable Boutcher committed to bringing key stakeholders together for a debrief and review of the events. This, he explained, is part of the PSNI's ongoing dedication to working with communities, fostering continuous learning, listening, and improvement year on year.
Concluding his message, Chief Constable Boutcher reinforced the PSNI's unwavering priority: the safety and wellbeing of every individual. He called on communities to ensure that this weekend truly reflects the very best of Northern Ireland: proud, respectful, and united.
