Contraception Warning For Women On Weight Loss And Diabetes Medicines
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued an important reminder to women using popular medications for weight loss and diabetes, urging them to utilise effective contraception. The advice specifically pertains to GLP-1 medicines, which are commonly known by brand names such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Victoza.
The MHRA defines effective contraception as both oral forms (like the pill) and non-oral forms (such as implants, coils, or condoms). A particular warning has been issued for individuals taking the weight loss injection, Mounjaro. Women who are overweight and using an oral form of contraception while on Mounjaro are advised to also use a non-oral form of contraception. This is due to concerns that Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in overweight individuals.
The full guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency is available on their website, under the heading "GLP-1 medicines for weight loss and diabetes: what you need to know". For more general information on contraception and its effectiveness, the public is directed to the Sexual Health NI website.
