Minister Welcomes £650m Electric Car Grant Scheme

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has voiced her support for the new £650m Electric Car Grant scheme, recently announced by the UK Government's Department for Transport. The scheme, which is now open to applicants across Northern Ireland, aims to make zero-emission vehicles more accessible and affordable for both private individuals and commercial fleets.

The grant provides financial assistance towards the purchase cost of new electric and hydrogen fuel cell-powered cars that meet specific environmental criteria and have a recommended retail price (RRP) below £37,000. There will be two tiers of grants available: £3,750 for the most environmentally sustainable vehicles and £1,500 for those deemed less environmentally sustainable.

A key feature of the scheme is that manufacturers will apply for their zero-emission cars to be eligible for the grant, removing the need for consumers to apply directly. This streamlined process means that dealerships will handle the administration, deducting the grant amount at the point of sale.

Minister Kimmins welcomed the initiative, stating: "Creating a carbon free environment is one of my Department's seven Foundations for a Better Future. Removing car emissions through increasing the number of zero emission vehicles will have the most significant impact on reducing carbon emissions from the transport sector."

She further highlighted the financial benefit for consumers: "Cost is often cited as the biggest barrier to purchasing an an electric vehicle and this grant scheme will significantly reduce the cost of a new EV and make that process more affordable. I would encourage any individual or business considering changing their vehicle to think about choosing the electric option and to avail of this scheme."
