Seven Police Officers Assaulted In Downpatrick
Seven police officers were assaulted in Downpatrick over the past weekend during two separate incidents where they were responding to public calls for help.
In one of the incidents, four officers sustained injuries from a man who spat, punched, and kicked at them, with one officer specifically kicked in the face. Despite their injuries, all four officers remained on duty to continue answering further calls for service.
The following night, Saturday, 26 July, a number of the same officers were again attacked while responding to a reported assault on a man. A 17-year-old female suspect punched, kicked, and headbutted the attending police officers. Once more, all assaulted officers remained on duty to serve the community. In both cases, the individuals involved have since been charged with multiple offences, including assault on police.
District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett strongly condemned the attacks, stating: "It should never be accepted as 'part of the job' for anyone to be punched, kicked or spat at. Police officers come to work knowing that it's a tough calling but they should expect to be able to do their jobs without fear of attack."
Superintendent Haslett highlighted that these incidents offer a snapshot of the daily risks faced by officers across Northern Ireland. He added: "Thankfully, all officers involved were fit to remain on duty, however it is important that our officers and the incredible work they do not be taken for granted."
