Clarke leads USPGA following impressive first round

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke is sitting proudly on top of the USPGA leader board following an impressive first round seven-under par 65 at Whistling Straits.

The Dungannon man opened with four straight birdies holding off the likes of playing partner Justin Leonard and Ernie Els to take a one shot lead into Friday.

Speaking following his opening round, Clarke said: "It is a nice way to start. But there is a long way to go yet. It's a good start, that's all, and I still think this course is a par 77."

World number one, Tiger Woods, meanwhile, is lying 10 shots behind the Ulsterman, but Vijay Singh, ranked third in the world, finished the day five under par after a round of 67.

Play starts at 1pm (BST) on Friday but Clarke will not tee off until 7.05 pm.
