DUP MLA Condemns Brendan McFarlane Tribute
North Belfast DUP MLA Phillip Brett has condemned a tribute to IRA terrorist Brendan 'Bik' McFarlane at Féile an Phobail, describing it as "deeply offensive to victims and their families." Mr Brett said that McFarlane was a convicted terrorist responsible for murder and destruction, including his role in the 1975 Bayardo Bar bombing which claimed the lives of five people.
Mr Brett stated that romanticising the actions of the IRA is an insult to bereaved families and that victims deserve better. He said he will continue to stand up for victims and "tell the truth" about McFarlane's role in a campaign of violence which devastated lives.
Kelly Seeks Clarity Over Arrest at Palestinian Vigil Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has written to the Chief Constable for clarity over the arrest of a woman at a Palestinian solidarity vigil. The party’s policing spokesperson said he wanted to know why Máire Mhic an Fhailí was arrested after providing her details in Irish, while others at the same event were only cautioned.
Mr Kelly stated that highlighting the situation in Palestine and Gaza is not a crime, and neither is speaking Irish. He went on to say that the "real crime is Israel’s policy of ethnic cleansing, starvation and genocide."
Man Released On Bail After L'Derry Drug Arrest
A 31-year-old man arrested in the Strand Road area of L'Derry on Sunday, 10 August, has been released on bail. The man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including being concerned in the supply of a Class A and a Class B controlled substance. He has been released to allow for further police enquiries.

Man Charged With Murder And Attempted Murder In Downpatrick
A man has been charged with murder and attempted murder following the death of Stephen Brannigan and the serious assault of a priest in Downpatrick on Sunday, 10 August. The body of 56-year-old Mr Brannigan was discovered at a house in the Marian Park area of the town. On the same day, a priest was seriously assaulted at St Patrick's Church.

Belfast City Council's Planning Committee has granted planning permission for several major developments across the city this month. Permission was given for a new 164-bedroom hotel, which will include a ground floor bar and restaurant, by applicant Andras House at the junction of Botanic Avenue and Donegall Pass.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has launched the 28th annual European Heritage Open Days (EHOD), an annual celebration of local history and culture. The event will take place on Saturday, 13 and Sunday, 14 September, offering free access to a variety of venues including historic cottages, mills, private houses, walks, and talks.

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has announced that the "Ambition to Grow" programme is helping over 250 companies create good jobs and increase external sales. The Invest NI programme, first launched in 2022, aims to support micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises in achieving sales outside of Northern Ireland.
