MLA Urges Vigilance After West Belfast Burglaries

Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker has urged people in west Belfast to be vigilant following a number of attempted burglaries, including one this morning where a man armed with knives entered several properties in Mount Eagles.

The PSNI is treating the incident as an aggravated burglary, and Mr Baker has appealed to anyone who saw suspicious activity or has CCTV footage to contact the police. He also advised residents to keep their doors and windows locked, despite the hot weather, following a number of attempted break-ins over the weekend.

Police Appeal After Attempted Theft In Newry

Police in Newry are appealing for information following an attempted theft at a petrol station on the Forkhill Road in Cloghoge.

It was reported at around 3.35am this morning that three men used an angle grinder on a fuel pump, causing some damage, before leaving in a white hatchback with no registration plates. The men were seen headed in the direction of the A1.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 150 of 14/08/25.

Belfast Man Fined After Dog Attack

A Belfast man was fined a total of £700 at Belfast Magistrates Court, following his conviction for offences after his dog attacked another dog.

Caolan Doherty, of Rinnalea Grove, was prosecuted after his Pocket Bully-type dog attacked a Cockapoo-type dog at Lenadoon Avenue on 14 January 2025.

Mr Doherty was fined £250 for the dog attack and a further £90 for each of five offences of keeping a dog without a licence. He was also ordered to pay an additional £72 in legal and court costs.

Hero Army Dog Handlers Honoured
Murdered soldiers who worked with specialist 'sniffer' dogs during the Northern Ireland Troubles have been remembered. The 'Red Paw' and its work across Northern Ireland was the subject of a special memorial service held in England at the weekend. It was in honour of the six dog handlers and two sniffer dogs killed in Northern Ireland.

Dog Attack Leaves Young Boy In Hospital
A young boy is receiving treatment in hospital after he was attacked by a dog in County Tyrone. Police said the incident happened in the village of Sion Mills on Sunday 11 August. The youngster was left shaken by the dog attack, which is understood to have been the second in the area in just two weeks. The dog warden has been informed.

Dog lovers urged to ‘scoop the poop’
Belfast City Council has today launched a major campaign to urge dog lovers to ‘scoop their poop’. The high visibility campaign is aimed at owners who allow their pets to foul the city’s streets and parks, but then don’t clean up the mess left behind.

NI Councils Warn Of Dogs Posing A Danger to Livestock
Dog walkers across Northern Ireland have been warned to keep control of their pets amid concerns for the safety of livestock. Dog worrying, especially during lambing season, is a serious concern for farmers, according to the Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council and the Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Council.
