Farage's Proposal A 'Direct Threat" To GFA - Alliance
Story: Alliance Deputy Leader Eóin Tennyson has warned that Nigel Farage's proposal to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) poses a direct threat to the Good Friday Agreement. The Upper Bann MLA was speaking after the Reform UK leader indicated that he would seek to renegotiate the agreement as part of his party's plans to leave the ECHR and scrap the Human Rights Act.
The Alliance Deputy Leader also said that Mr Farage's proposals are not only impractical but also show a "reckless disregard for the people of Northern Ireland."
He concluded by stating that Alliance will "stand firmly against any attempt to erode human rights, destabilise the institutions of the Agreement and the hard-won progress they have delivered over the past 27 years."
Mr Tennyson stated that the ECHR is a "bedrock" of the Good Friday Agreement, and any move to roll back these protections would be a "sinister development." He added that it would breach an international treaty and "effectively rip up" the agreement. The Alliance Deputy Leader also said that Mr Farage's proposals are not only impractical but also show a "reckless disregard for the people of Northern Ireland."
