Man Arrested In Belfast Over 'Grandparent Scam'
The PSNI have arrested a 24-year-old man in east Belfast, wanted to face fraud charges in Hungary.
He was detained on a Hungarian extradition warrant and is due to appear before Laganside Extradition Court later today, Friday, 5 September 2025.
The offences involved calls being made from Northern Ireland to victims in their 80s in Hungary, who were dishonestly persuaded to hand over cash and valuables to a collector. Sergeant Davey from the PSNI's International Policing Unit said the arrest was the result of an ongoing investigation involving his unit, Europol, and Musgrave CID. He stated that police believe there may be "others involved in Northern Ireland" and urged members of the public with information to report it.
The Sergeant added that the PSNI will continue working with colleagues across Europe to make sure offenders are brought before the courts. He said that older people across Europe "continue to be scammed out of their savings and valuables by criminals with no regard for their victims."
