Mother and daughter undertake challenge of a lifetime
A resilient local mother and daughter team are preparing to conquer Kenya's highest mountain.
Aine Savage and her 24-year-old daughter, Gabrielle, are currently training for the 10-day adventure which they will undertake to raise funds for Northern Ireland charity, Action Cancer.
For Aine, completing the challenge will be an extra special triumph as she is currently undergoing chemotherapy. She said the adventure has given her the strength to fight illness and the opportunity to give something back to the people who have helped her: "The trek is a real challenge for me and I might not have got through the treatment without it to work for," Aine said. "Doing this will mean something good has come out of the illness."
The Mount Kenya trek is a two-part trial for the team. First, both mother and daughter must raise a substantial amount of funds. Next they must follow a rigorous training programme to prepare them for walking between 6-8 hours a day over rough and undulating terrain.
There are currently still a few places available on the Mount Kenya Expedition, so anyone interested in joining Aine and Gabrielle on their adventure, should contact Action Cancer on 028 9080 3344 or e-mail trek@actioncancer.org
