Tobacco group praise Customs' anti-smuggling efforts
The Tobacco Alliance, a group representing around 19,000 independent retailers across the UK through its campaign 'Retailers Against Smuggling', has praised the work of Customs and Excise in the fight against tobacco smuggling.
In a survey published on Friday, the group revealed that UK shop owners are losing almost £1,000 in revenue to smuggling each week.
Highlighting this threat to independent retailers, National Spokeswoman for the group, Audrey Wales said: “We very much welcome the recent achievements of HM Customs and their increased efforts through Customs Minister John Healey MP in tackling tobacco smuggling”
Recent OCTF success in Northern Ireland saw the arrest of two Belfast men in May after Customs uncovered half a million smuggled cigarettes in a shipment of furniture at Belfast docks.
In a follow-up to the operation Customs officers found and detained £52,550 in cash under the proceeds of crime legislation.

Smuggled cigarettes seized at Belfast International Airport
Customs Officers have netted around 300,000 cigarettes in an operation at Belfast International Airport (BIA) carried out this morning. Customs assisted by police detected the cigarettes on flights arriving from Spain and the Canary Islands, a haul which would have amounted to approximately £50,000 in lost revenue.
