Fermanagh prepare to take on Mayo in replay
Fermanagh prepare to face the might of Mayo in the replay of the Bank of Ireland Senior Football Championship semi-final on Saturday.
Following the nine point all draw with the Ernesiders, there are doubts over the fitness of Mayo midfielder Ronan McGarrity, top-scorer last Sunday, and Conor Mortimer. McGarrity has a possible cracked rib and Mortimer has sustained an ankle injury.
In the first semi-final in their GAA history, Fermanagh, viewed as the underdogs, secured a draw with Mayo and will now take on the possibly seriously weakened Connaught champions on Saturday.
Fermanagh dominated much of the game and in the final quarter of the match had enough scoring chances to leave manager Charlie Mulgrew disappointed that the Ernesiders did not run off the winners.
Mayo will be the more relieved of the two sides, though dismissal of wing-forward James Gill who picked up a second yellow card early in the second half must have hindered their performance.
A stout Fermanagh defence blunted Mayo' s attack. Kieran McDonald and Conor Mortimer were held in check, forced to depend on a few good passes as Mayo dropped an extra man into their defence.
Mayo's midfield influence faded as Liam McBarron and Martin McGrath began to dominate feeding the hunger of Fermanagh's forwards, particularly Colm Bradley.
Three points to the good in the early minutes, Fermanagh had the better start but Mayo began to exert some control with Conor Mortimer and Alan Dillon from frees. But it was the 22nd minute before Trevor Mortimer brought the scores level and Conor Mortimer, Dillon and full-back David Heaney then put Mayo 0-6 to 0-3 ahead. Two late points from Bradley and Eamon Maguire cut the gap to one point by halftime.
Fermanagh had determined to make Croke Park theirs and moments after the throw-in, Bradley had the sides on level terms 6 points all.
Gill sent off, Fermanagh's Liam McBarron sent home a point setting the tit-for-tat pattern. Though in the final minutes, Fermanagh looked most likely to grab a winner, it never came and instead the sides tied on 9-points all will meet at Croke Park again on Saturday.
Scores:
Mayo: C Mortimer 0-4(2f), A Dillon 0-2(2f), T Mortimer 0-1, K McDonald 0-1, D Heaney 0-1.
Fermanagh: C Bradley 0-3, J Sherry 0-1, M Little 0-1, E Maguire 0-1, S Maguire 0-1(f), T Brewster 0-1(f), L McBarron 0-1.
