UU conference to discuss 9/11 recommendations
Details of recommendations made by a taskforce set up to examine building regulations following the 9/11 terrorist attacks are to be revealed at a three-day international conference at the University of Ulster tomorrow.
Organised by the University of Ulster and Interscience Communications, and held its Belfast campus, 'Human Behaviour in Fire' will bring together experts from both the public and private sectors and survivors of the attacks which killed more than 2,700 people.
Some 44 papers will be presented by speakers from 19 countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the USA, the UK, Malaysia and South Korea.
The keynote address on the lessons to be learned from 9/11 will be given by Patricia Lancaster, Commissioner of NYC Building Department, and Stanley Dawe, Chief of Fire Prevention, Fire Department of New York City.
It will end with a special keynote address by Sir Bernard Crossland, Emeritus Professor Queen’s University and chairman of the Kings Cross Enquiry which examined the deaths of 31 people in a fire at the London underground station during the rush hour on November 18 1987.

Justice Minister Announces Additional Funding For Department

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

NIFRS Launches Online Home Fire Safety Check Tool
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) has introduced a new online tool to help residents assess their home fire safety. The Home Fire Safety Check coincides with Fire Safety Week, which runs from September 30th to October 6th. The initiative aims to reduce the number of house fires in Northern Ireland.
