Prince Charles attends World Ploughing Contest opening
Prince Charles has attended today's official opening ceremony of the 51st World Ploughing Contest being staged in Ballykelly.
During his visit, the Prince of Wales was introduced to representatives from the 28 competing countries and observed both modern and more traditional ploughing methods.
The championship is being held in Northern Ireland for the fourth time on land belonging to farmer Jim Barr, and before making his way to the event, Prince Charles was introduced to the Barr family at their home Foyleview Farm, planting a tree in the garden.
Accompanied by William King, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Ploughing Association, Prince Charles was given a tour of the competition area and had the opportunity to watch a ploughing demonstration by current world champion David Wright. Northern Ireland has won the World Contest on 8 occasions, surpassed only by Austria with 9 wins.
Flags from each of the competing nations were raised once Chairman of the World Ploughing Organisation, Ian Blair, declared the 51st World Ploughing Contest officially open.
Before departing, Prince Charles viewed the Cairn of Peace sculpture and was presented with a gift of engraved Tyrone Crystal by Mr King.
The Prince arrived in Northern Ireland on Wednesday to undertake a series of engagements during a two-day visit which ends today.

Lidl Northern Ireland has announced the reopening of its Stewartstown Road store in West Belfast and the opening of a new store in Carryduff. The Stewartstown Road store, which has undergone a major redevelopment, will reopen on December 5th. The new Carryduff store, Lidl’s 43rd in Northern Ireland, will open on December 12th.

The 50th World Ploughing Contest, which was held in Ontario, Canada, saw Magherafelt man, David Wright lift a 'Golden Plough' award whilst David Gill from Hillsborough came sixth overall in the competition.
