Minister gives councils £10 million to fight against waste

Environment Minister Angela Smith has made available £10 million for District Councils in Northern Ireland to combat waste.

Mrs Smith said the funds would be made available to Councils to assist the implementation of their Waste Management Plans.

"It is vitally important that we continue to make progress towards meeting the recycling targets contained in the Waste Management Strategy," the Minister said.

"The targets are challenging and the funding I have announced today will help meet costs of the infrastructure to enable us all to meet these targets. I continue to be impressed with the work the Councils are making.

"We are already seeing progress in our fight against waste. But success can only come if there is partnership and commitment from government, district councils and the general public. All partners in the fight against waste must not become complacent. Only by working together can we all - Reduce, Re-use and Recycle."

All 26 Councils in Northern Ireland will benefit from the grant from DoE to assist with the implementation of their Waste Management Plans. This is the fourth year of the Scheme which has proved successful in targeting funds to Councils to meet specific needs in management of their waste.
