Trading Standards warns of money laundering mailshot
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment’s Trading Standards Service has urged local businesses to be on the lookout for a new mailshot on money laundering law.
A number of local businesses have contacted Trading Standards about the official looking mailshot, which actually comes from a private house in Crewe.
The mailshot is headed 'Final Notice” and refers to The Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 and The Money Laundering Regulations 2003. It purports to come from the Anti-Money Laundering Support Team and the address given is Lyme House, 98 Plane Tree Drive, Crewe, Cheshire.
The aim of the mailshot is to get businesses to purchase an anti-money laundering training pack for each of their staff at £75 per head.
“This notice has not been sent by an official government agency and so you are not obliged to send any money”, said Kevin McNamara of the Trading Standards Service.
“This latest approach can be added to the existing list of bogus mailshots which include those connected with data protection and health and safety. These attempt to get local businesses to part with their hard earned money.”

Legislation Introduced For Protection Of Newborns
New legislation has been introduced in Northern Ireland to protect newborn babies from serious brain and spinal problems. From 2026, folic acid will be added to non-wholemeal flour, the Department of Health has announced. The move follows measures to update Bread and Flour Regulations across the four nations following a UK wide consultation.

Fuel Laundering Operation Hit Water Supplies
Illegal fuel laundering is doing more damage than just costing the Exchequer lost revenue. It emerged yesterday that damage in Co Tyrone, at Aughnacloy Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW), was caused by by-products of a suspected fuel laundering operation - where agricultural 'red' diesel is stripped off the colouring and sold on as legitimate fuel.
