Man Dies In L'Derry Flat Fire
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has confirmed that a man in his sixties has died after a fire at a flat in the Galliagh area of L'Derry.
The blaze in Bloomfield Park was reported at 3.42pm on Wednesday 19 August, and all three emergency services attended the scene.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death. Officers remain at the location as enquiries continue, and an update will be provided in due course.
A Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) spokesperson said: "The thoughts and sympathies of Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service are with the loved ones of a man who died following a flat fire in Bloomfield Park, Galliagh.
"Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a flat at 3.39pm yesterday (Wednesday 19 August 2026). Two Appliances from Northland Fire Station, 2 Appliances from Crescent Link Fire Station, 1 Appliance and a Command Support Unit from Strabane Fire Station attended the incident.
"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used 3 hose reel jets and 1 jet to extinguish the fire. Tragically, a man, aged in his 60s, died at the scene.
"The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the incident was dealt with by 6.16pm."

An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.
