£380,000 A5 Resurfacing In Omagh Underway
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced a £380,000 carriageway resurfacing scheme on the A5 in Omagh. The project, which covers Great Northern Road, the Derry Road Roundabout and Beltany Road, is scheduled to start on Monday 7 September 2026.
The scheme will resurface approximately 700 metres from the Gortrush Industrial Estate junction to 20 Beltany Road.
Minister Liz Kimmins said: "This is a substantial investment of £380,000 for the A5 route and the Omagh area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities. I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out."
To enable safe delivery, temporary traffic management will operate from Monday 7 September until Sunday 20 September 2026. There will be full overnight road closures between 8.00 pm and 7.00 am, with the carriageways open daily from 7.00 am to 8.00 pm.
During closures from Monday 7 September to Sunday 13 September 2026, signed diversions will operate as follows:
Diversion Northbound (to Strabane): A5 Great Northern Road – A32 Railway Link Road - A32 Dromore Road – A32 Clanabogan Road - B4 Drumlish Road - B84 Dooish Road - B50 Omagh Road – B50 Main Street, Drumquin – B50 Castlederg Road – B50 Drumquin Road – B72 Castlegore Road – B72 Lower Strabane Road, Castlederg – B72 Strabane Road - B72 Fyfin Road – A5 Mulvin Road.
Diversion Southbound (to Omagh): A5 Great Northern Way – B46 Plumbridge Road – B46 Killymore Road B48 - Gortin – B48 Glenpark Road – B46 Gortin Road – B48 Mountjoy Road – B48 Drumragh Avenue – B4 Market Street – B4 Campsie Road – A505 Campsie Roundabout – A505 Crevenagh Road – A5 Crevenagh Roundabout – A5 Great Northern Road.
Diversion to/from Drumquin: A5 Great Northern Road – A32 Railway Link Road - A32 Dromore Road – A32 Clanabogan Road - B4 Drumlish Road - B84 Dooish Road to Crooked Bridge junction with B50 Omagh Road and vice versa.
Diversion from Derry Road to A5 Great Northern Road: Use C667 Brookmount Road.
Diversion from A5 Great Northern Road to Derry Road: Use A32 Railway Link Road, U3005 James Street, U3000 Church Street and U3000 Castle Street.
From Monday 14 September to Sunday 20 September 2026, the signed routes will be:
Diversion Northbound (to Strabane): A5 Great Northern Road – B50 Gillygooley Road - B50 Omagh Road – Main Street, Drumquin - B50 Castlederg Road - B50 Drumquin Road - B72 Castlegore Road, B72 Lower Strabane Road, Castlederg – B72 Strabane Road - B72 Fyfin Road - A5 Mulvin Road.
Diversion Southbound (to Omagh): A5 Great Northern Way – B46 Plumbridge Road – B46 Killymore Road B48 - Gortin – B48 Glenpark Road – B46 Gortin Road – U1528 Strathroy Road – B48 Strathroy Link Road – B48 Derry Road – A5 Great Northern Road.
Drivers needing access to business premises between the Derry Road Roundabout and Newtownstewart during the closures should follow the northbound diversion and use the A5 from Victoria Bridge.
The Department has planned works and traffic management to reduce disruption as far as possible, but some delays are likely. Road users should allow extra time for journeys in the area and adhere to all temporary restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather, the project is expected to be substantially complete by Sunday 20 September 2026. The Department will provide updates if arrangements change.

Road death figures are lowest in 50 years
Figures released today by the Department of the Environment have revealed that road deaths in Northern Ireland last year were at the lowest level in 50 years. The total number of road deaths in 2005 totalled 136, the lowest number since 1952 when 133 people lost their lives at at time when there was one eighth of the number of vehicles on the road.

Man Dies In Workplace Accident In Co Armagh
A man has died in a workplace accident in Co Armagh. It is believed the man was crushed by a road roller while a new road surface was being laid on the Bog Road, Forkhill, on Wednesday, 31 May. Police and the Health and Safety Executive have launched an investigation.
