Derry project aims to create jobs
An innovative project that aims to create ‘social economy’ jobs in Londonderry has been launched today by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI).
The project promoted by Creggan Enterprises Limited and funded by the Peace II Programme through DETI, involved the refurbishment of the former United Technologies factory in the Creggan estate which became vacant in 1997.
The project will be presented as a case study in economic regeneration to delegates from across Europe at an EU seminar in Finland next week. The themes will include competitiveness, co-operation and competitiveness, and sustainable development.
Speaking at the event, DETI Permanent Secretary Bruce Robinson, said: “This project exemplifies the important contribution that Peace II funding is making to economic revitalisation in particularly disadvantaged areas. It also helps to underpin our drive to encourage the development of entrepreneurship across the entire community.
“The impressive transformation of the factory offers a new gateway to the Creggan. The project is a testament to the resilience of the strong community network that exists here and shows what can be achieved in the social economy sector.”
The aim of the project is to create successful indigenous enterprises that will provide ultimately both economic wealth and give confidence within local communities, Mr Robinson concluded.
